Fractured Loyalty ruling
Asked by TempleOfAsmodeus 6 years ago
If my opponent controls a Runeclaw Bear enchanted by Fractured Loyalty, and I target the bear with Swords to Plowshares, does the bear get exiled, or does the bear come under my control? Does changing control cause the bear to become an invalid target?

Thanks, Kogarashi! That's what I expected, just wasn't 100% certain. Appreciate it!

When you cast Swords to Plowshares targeting the bear, you trigger Fractured Loyalty. That goes on the stack above your Swords, and resolves first, giving you control of the bear.
However, since Swords to Plowshares doesn't specify that it must be a creature your opponent controls, and the bear hasn't become a new object as it hasn't changed zones, it's still a valid target. It will be exiled once Swords resolves, and because you are now its controller, you will gain life equal to its power.
