Can you de-equipt equiptments?
Asked by CarryOnMyWaywardSon 12 years ago
Lets say my opponet has Vulshok Gauntlets on his Gravecrawler . He attacks with Gravecrawler . After the battle step is over, can he/she de equipt the artifact? When I say de equipt I dont mean put on another creature (which I know you can do), I mean just taking it off the creature.

The only way you can remove an equipment from a creature is if you equip it to another creature.

Or give the first protection from a characteristic that the equipment has, heh.

The only time an equipment is unequipped from a creature is if it is equipped from that creature straight to another one, or if the equipped creature dies. If your opponent swings with Gravecrawler , then sacrifices him to something like Bone Splinters , then the equipment won't be equipped to anything.
Other than that, once equipped to a creature an equipment can only be equipped to another creature, never de-equipped.

There currently is no "de-equip", or unequip ability. An equipment only becomes unequipped only when the equipped creature either leaves the battlefield not through phasing, or when the equipment is equipped or attached, to another creature.

@ GoblinsInc, I thought that protection isn't retroactive, as in, you don't automatically get un-enchanted by something you don't want just because you give it protection from that enchantment, for example.

@emblasochist: That's incorrect. Protection will cause equipment and enchantments of the protected-against quality to become unattached because of what protection does:
Protection from Z means:
Damage - Protection prevents damage from sources of quality Z
Enchant/Equip - Protection prevents enchantments and equipment of quality Z from being or remaining attached
Blocking - Protection stops creatures of quality Z from blocking the protected creature
Targeting - Protection stops spells and abilities of quality Z from targeting the protected permanent.

Has protection z always caused any attached permanents of quality z to become unattached when the permanent gains protection z? I always thought it was not retroactive...

It's been like that since at least M10. Can't say about earlier since that's when I started getting into the rules.

Shit... I may have been cheating on protection for 4 years.

There are, by the way, certain effects that do allow you to unattach an equipment, but they're pretty obscure (e.g. Disarm , Carry Away or Fulgent Distraction )

No. You can't unequip something. The ability only allows for the equipment to be equipped to a creature.
