Do planeswalker count as spells? can you counter them? do they trigger prowess? please help me!

Yes; a planeswalker is a spell when it is cast and placed on the stack, same as most such. If they somehow get placed directly onto the battlefield, then they weren't cast, and were never a spell. They are non-creature spells when cast, so they trigger prowess.

The new planeswalkers from Origins are cast as creatures, but otherwise are similar.

To prevent confusion: You can Counterspell the Origin Planeswalkers when they're cast as a creature, but not the Planeswalker that's being put on the battlefield by their blink ability. You can, however, counter the blink ability with Stifle or the like. In that case, they will never get exiled in the first place and remain creatures for the time being.
