Can Silence be cast after a spell in order to sort of counter it?
Asked by Dreno33 12 years ago
If I cast Silence after someone casts a creature (in response, before it resolves) will it prevent it from resolving?
I am unsure but my assumption is that it will not affect that creature spell since it has already been cast. It'll just prevent them from casting anymore spells.
Let me know, my friend keeps trying to counter my spells with Silence and he doesn't believe me, haha.
That's exactly correct, the reminder text even says "spells cast before this resolves are unaffected". Since his Silence goes on the stack after whatever you cast, the Silence resolves first and then you can't cast anything else. Since there was already something on the stack, it has already been cast, and isn't affected.

Your friend should cast Silence during your upkeep so that he greatly reduces the amount of spells you can cast that turn. That's kind of the point of it. Or to cast before you cast a spell so that it can't be countered.

If you need proof, just look at its rulings on its Oracle page. It specifically mentions this issue in the first ruling.

No Silence 's ability does not take effect until it resolves, so he could cast a spell say Negate to counter it. Once Silence resolves he will not be able to cast additional spells, but since the spell you are responding to has already been cast, it will resolve. The reminder text on Silence even says this.
