Can Pristine Angel be Resurrected?
Asked by SonOfBelial 12 years ago
If a creature with protection, such as [Pristine Angel], is in the graveyard, will its protection still be active, so that it cannot be returned to the battlefield with spells such as [Resurrection], [Hymn of Rebirth], etc.?
Also, does protection from a certain color (or all colors, as with the Pristine Angel) prevent the soulbonding ability?
As a related question, can creatures with shroud be Resurrected or soulbonded?

Static abilities only function while a card is on the battlefield unless those abilities specifically state otherwise (see Bridge from Below ).
Therefore, Pristine Angel will not have protection while in the graveyard. It can be the target of spells and abilities it would have protection from if it were on the battlefield.
Protection does not prevent soulbonding. Protection does five things: it stops damage, enchanting, equipping, blocking, and targeting by any source with the quality protected against. Since a spell or ability only targets if it explicitly uses the word target, soulbond does not target. It also doesn't do anything else that protection would stop. Therefore, creatures with protection can be soulbonded.
Similarly, creatures with shroud can be soulbonded.

Also, you need to use double brackets to link cards, not just single brackets.

If a permanent card has abilities, then those abilities only work on the battlefield unless they specifically mention some other zone they work from. A Pristine Angel doesn't have protection from anything while it's in the graveyard, so it can be brought back. Same thing for creature cards with shroud in a graveyard.
The full rules text for Soulbond doesn't use the word "target" to describe the effect, so protection and shroud don't interfere with it.

Yeah, that explains it. Thanks for the input. Eldrazi Conscription should work with Pristine Angel , since it is a colorless enchantment, correct?

Correct. Since it is colorless it has no color and therefore the protection will not affect it.

Static abilities like protection and shroud are only active when the creature is on the battlefield. Don't know about soulbond and shroud, though.
