Can players respond between the resolution of effects on the stack? If so, how does this work

Asked by nhhale 1 year ago

I can’t think of any examples off the top of my head, but something I’ve seen happen in games I’ve played and ones I’ve observed is that while multiple spells/abilities are on the stack, some player wants to perform a game action after one effect has resolved and before the next effect resolves. Once all players have passed priority and the effects on the stack start resolving in order, is the active player passing priority in between the resolution of effects on the stack? If not, is the active player allowed to take game actions during that time? I am a little confused because the only scenarios I understand the active player to be passing priority are after taking game actions or passing between phases/steps.

Each player gets priority to active-abilities/cast/spells before each effect on the stack resolves. A player can wait until a few effects resolve on the stack and then add new things to the stack.

For an example of how something like this plays out, here's something that happened to me on Arena recently: I targeted my opponent's Amalia Benavides Aguirre with a kill spell, triggering her Ward ability. The Ward trigger resolved and I paid 3 life. Then, before my kill spell resolved, my opponent responded with a defensive spell to protect her, so now I was out 3 life and a card.
