Can my opponent exile my creature when I want to attach equipment to it that gives shroud?

Asked by Agito9 14 years ago

Good day everyone! ;) I've just played a really long magic game with my friend. And almost in the beginning something happened. And now we have a problem. And the problem is : I have Cloak and Dagger on the battlefield. It's my turn , and I'm casting Ratcatcher and as soon as I cast him , I want to attach Cloak and Dagger to him immediately , and after I said words : Paying 6 mana , casting Ratcatcher and .... , my friends wants to cast Path to Exile on my Ratcatcher. So what happens faster ??? Ratcatcher enters the battlefield, and Cloak and Dagger doesn't equip , because he got exiled?Or He enters the battlefield together with Cloak and Dagger because of attachment, and my friend can't cast anything on him?

It enters the battlefield which triggers cloak and dagger and puts the ability on the stack. Then your opponent casts path to exile. Path exile is above cloak and dagger on the stack so it happens first exiling your ratcatcher before it gets equiped.

Pretty straight forward. You can't say, I am going to cast a creature and equip as a single action. Those actually have two major actions. Each can be responded to.

1: You cast a Ratcatcher , he lets it resolve.

2: You equip the Ratcatcher , in response he Path to Exile it.

The stack will look like this: Path to Exile is on top of the stack so the Ratcatcher is exiled. Next is the equip of Cloak and Dagger . Since there is no legal target to equip to, the equip fizzles.

So... As I understood , the text that says : Whenever a Rogue creature enters the battlefield, you may attach Cloak and Dagger to it. Is the same as equip?I mean , this ability that triggers , because Ratcatcher is rogue , works the same way as equip? So Instant exile is faster? Right?

Yeah pretty much because it goes on the stack, but path exile would go on top of it, because it was cast in response to you trying to equip the card, and cards on top of the stack happen first.

Okey , thank you a lot, and ONE last question.

Whenever a Rogue creature enters the battlefield, you may attach = Equip.

Attach is same as Equip???

If an ability starts with the words "when", "whenever", or "at", that means it's a triggered ability. When a triggered ability triggers, it's put onto the stack, and won't resolve until both players pass priority while it's the topmost object on the stack. That means each player has the opportunity to play more spells and abilities before the triggered ability resolves, so your opponent is allowed to Path to Exile your Ratcatcher before the Cloak and Dagger 's triggered ability attaches it.

To your most recent specific question:

Using the equip ability of an equipment causes it to become attached to the creature. The triggered ability of Cloak and Dagger is just attaching the equipment in a different way.

The "speed" of an effect (not an official game term but people use it a lot) is about when you're allowed to play a spell or ability. "Sorcery Speed" means you're only allowed to play it during one of your main phases when you have priority and the stack is empty (when you'd be allowed to play a sorcery). "Instant Speed" means you can play it any time you have priority (when you're allowed to play an instant).

For example, in this situation, you can't respond to your opponent's Path by activating the equip ability of the Cloak, because equip is a "Sorcery Speed" ability and the stack isn't empty (there's a triggered ability and a spell already on it).

"Speed" doesn't change how spells and abilities resolve. The Ratcatcher gets exiled.
