Can Lord of Extinction be scavenged?

Asked by Mr_crazydude 11 years ago

Looked it up online but I'm getting conflicting messages on this.

I have Varolz, the Scar-Striped on the field and Lord of Extinction is in my graveyard. I scavenge Lord of Extinction . Did I just get 0 counters or X counters equal to all cards in all graveyards?

You get * cards

a creature that has a power and toughness of */* has that power and toughness in all zones, not just the battlefield.

The exception is in the case where he needs to be on the battlefield for */* to be calculated, in which case calculable values will default to 0.

208.2a The card may have a characteristic-defining ability that sets its power and/or toughness according to some stated condition. (See rule 604.3.) Such an ability is worded [This creatures] [power or toughness] is equal to . . . or [This creatures] power and toughness are each equal to . . . This ability functions everywhere, even outside the game. If the ability needs to use a number that cant be determined, including inside a calculation, use 0 instead of that number.

Notice that even though CDAs work in all zones Scavenge uses the amount calculated when the card was last in graveyard so Lord of Extinction will give N counters (where N was its power in graveyard) even though Lord of Extinction has a power of N-1 when its moved to exile.

I'm a bit confused by the answers, I'm sorry to be reading this a bit late but I'm to understand that the using Varolz you will get 0 counters to distribute correct?

you get the amount of cards in each graveyard minus Lord of Extinction himself (because the scavenge ability 'activates' when he's exiled and therefore not in the graveyard anymore)
