Can I use regenerate effects before combat?

Asked by Amarin1492 10 years ago

Context: Pauper EDH game.My opponent casts Naturalize targeting Broken Fall during his endstep. I have a 3/3 centaur creature token on the battlefield. Can I return Broken Fall to my hand to "regenerate" my centaur (and therefore save the broken fall from the naturalize) even though the centaur is not in combat?

Yes you can. To 'regenerate' something means to place a 'shield' around the regenerated permanent that is a replacement effect for the next time it would be destroyed. These regeneration 'shields' only last until end of turn, so the shield would not carry over to your turn. Simply put, you can regenerate a creature at any time, but the shield is only relevant when it would next be destroyed.
