Can I transmute a spell at instant speed?

Asked by Dugorithon 11 years ago

Say I have Clutch of the Undercity in my hand, with two Islands and two Swamps untapped. It's the opponent's turn and I have priority.

Do I have the choice of hardcasting this spell to bounce a threat, or paying the transmute cost, both at instant speed? The MtG wiki doesn't mention if Transmute can be activated as an instant.

The reminder text for transmute, which actually appears on Clutch of the Undercity , explicitly says that you may activate a transmute ability only any time you may cast a sorcery.

nitpick to the 'accepted answer' -- "only any time you may cast a sorcery" is not correct. If you had flash on your sorcery, like Quicken or Leyline of Anticipation , you still couldn't transmute at instant speed.

Should say something like "you may activate a transmute ability only at sorcery speed."

@KevinLS: Actually, "only any time you may cast a sorcery" is correct because that phrase has a specific rules meaning. That phrase always means exactly the following: "on your main phase while the stack is empty and you have priority." Effects that change when you could cast a sorcery spell don't change the meaning of that phrase.

Technically speaking, there's no such thing as "sorcery speed."

Uh, OK, perhaps I shouldn't use strong language and say you're not correct, you were. But maybe you also should think about who you're trying to explain something to, Epochalyptik. I don't think most of the people asking questions about the rules would know that there is a specific rules meaning to your phrase that is different to the phrase itself. I know there's no 'sorcery speed', but I'm trying to clarify that you can't flash Transmute, because I know a lot of people try to take that step.
