Can I play a non-instant during my main phase after an opponent has resolved an instant?

Asked by CavortingOgre 9 years ago

It's my turn. Can I play a sorcery in my main phase after my opponent plays an instant and it resolves?

Example (during 1st main phase) : I choose to do nothing, pass priority. Opponent plays Lightning Strike during their priority, and it resolves. I gain priority again.

When I gain priority again can I play a non-instant card? If someone knows which section of the rules to look at for clarification that would be extremely helpful. Thank you.

I am very new to the game, and I was having an argument with a friend who has been playing for a very long time. They told me that I could not play a sorcery after I had passed my main phase priority, and I would like to clear this up.

Yes. Non-instant spells that don't have flash may be cast during either of your own main phases while the stack is empty and you have priority. Casting an instant doesn't somehow prevent you from casting non-instants once the stack becomes empty again.

You may be confused with another rule that states that if players pass priority in succession over an empty stack, the game moves to the next step or phase. For example, if you're in your first main phase have an empty stack, pass priority to your opponent, and your opponent passes priority back, then the game moves to combat. However, if your opponent casts something, then you must pass priority to resolve that object. Following the resolution, you will be in the same position as before: you can cast (or activate) something, or you can pass priority and attempt to move the game to the next step or phase.

You can cast the spell. Your reasoning was correct. Nice job with the example :)

07.1. A player who has priority may cast a sorcery card from his or her hand during a main phase of his or her turn when the stack is empty. Casting a sorcery as a spell uses the stack. (See rule 601, Casting Spells.)

This rule is also applicable to other non-instant spells.

You are only able to cast Sorcery spells on your turn, during the Pre-Combat Main Phase and/or the Post-Combat Main Phase the stack is completely empty and you have priority.

Here is a resource that will help you learn: Priority Chart
