Can i make Volcano Hellion deal damage to my opponent if I donate it with Bazaar Trader before I resolve its ability?

Asked by Chino90 6 years ago

I have a Bazaar Trader in play. I play a Volcano Hellion, chose a target for its ability, and donate it with the trader's ability. When the Hellion ability's resolve, does it deal damage to me or to my opponent?

The ability is put onto the stack under your control before you have priority to activate the Trader. If/When control of the Hellion changes to your opponent's control, nothing will happen to the ability already on the stack, it is still under your control, and will still deal damage to you.

So the "it deals damage to you" would check the "you" by the time it is casted, and not when it resolves?

It checks when it resolves, but once it's on the stack it's not bound to its source anymore. If the Hellion were to die, the ability would still resolve. When the hellion changes control, the ability does not. Abilities keep track of who controls them, not just the permanents they came from.

109.5. The words you and your on an object refer to the objects controller, its would-be controller (if a player is attempting to play, cast, or activate it), or its owner (if it has no controller). For a static ability, this is the current controller of the object its on. For an activated ability, this is the player who activated the ability. For a triggered ability, this is the controller of the object when the ability triggered, unless its a delayed triggered ability. To determine the controller of a delayed triggered ability, see rules 603.7df.

Italicized the important bit here.

Thank you very much :).

No problem. The You/Your clauses can feel a bit vague as printed. I actually had to do some research just to make sure I wasn't full of it on this topic, even as rules-savvy as I think myself to be lol.
