As rckclimber777 said, the process is not that simple. You can't target a planeswalker with Gut Shot , Shock , etc.
However, there's a redirect rule that allows a player to redirect noncombat damage dealt to an opponent to a planeswalker that opponent controls. Therefore, you resolve the burn spell against your opponent and state that you are choosing to redirect the damage to his or her walker instead.

Ok, so the player can choose to redirect it to the planeswalker or himself.

No. The player who controls the source of the noncombat damage chooses whether the damage is ultimately done to himself/herself or the walker.
A player may also not redirect noncombat damage to a planeswalker he or she controls, even if he or she also controls the source of the damage.

That first sentence should say "opponent," not "himself/herself."

Ok, here I am, asking yet ANOTHER question that I came up with while reading Q&A.
Epochalyptik, I was digging through the comp rules in regards to redirecting noncombat damage to a planeswalker. Is there a specific reason you can't Gut Shot your own planeswalker? I mean, I see that the rules specifically states if "noncombat damage would be dealt to a player my an opponent, the opponent that controls that source of noncombat damage may redirect it to a planeswalker that player controls."
But I didn't find anything explicitly talking about why a player can't redirect noncombat damage he deals to himself to a planeswalker he controls.
Just kind of game breaking, to put a damage sponge out for yourself, you think?

In a way, yes. Think about casting a walker, getting its effect, and then making it eat the damage off of another of your spells. It's also kind of illogical from a lore perspective - you're going to spend resources to get this powerful mage to fight by your side only to attack him or her yourself?

As primarily a player of Black, and find the idea of hurting my allies particularly... delicious.
Heck, that could be a pretty awesome card for black. Damage your own planeswalker for some nice little effect.

Gut shot targets a player which can then be redirected to the planeswalker.
