Can I exile a token in the graveyard?

Asked by hochmaster 11 years ago

I want to know if I can use Scavenging Ooze 's ability to exile a token from the graveyard, for the brief moment that it even exists in the graveyard. Can I do that, or does the token cease to exist immediately after entering the grave?

No, whenever you would get priority to activate the ooze's ability, the token ceases to exist when state based actions are performed.

216.3. A token in a zone other than the in-play zone ceases to exist. This is a state-based effect.

Nope, it cease to exist, although it is still sent to the graveyard, it does not exist once it arrives there.

Dang, I really wanted to perform some really crazy shenanigans with 1/1 red elementals and the ooze. Guess not. Thank you both for answering!

Even if there was some way to sneak in before the token gets erased (I'm pretty sure it's completely impossible), tokens aren't cards. Scavenging Ooze specifically says "target card".

Hey guys just stumbled into your thread researching the exact same matter myself. It is true that Scavenging Ooze cannot be used on tokens, since they are cards. However it is not true that the tokens disappear in the graveyard before you can do something. They arrive in the graveyard, then disappears into nothingness with instant speed. So if you would have another instant speed ability, to exile the token for benefit for instance, you would be able to do so, since the usual stack rules allso applies here.See the following link for reference:http://community.wizards.com/content/forum-topic/3254541

They disappear into nothingness at SBA speed, meaning nobody may respond to it, because SBA's are checked whenever a player would get priority. By the time a player has a chance to respond, the token is already gone.

the fact that it is a STB is irrelivant, Scavenging Ooze specificlly states "target card", so it doesn't work. I have asked a judge at a FNM event if tokens hit the graveyard, and they do long enough for triggered abilites to happen. you could respond to the triggered ability, so if IT DID NOT SAY TARGET CARD you could exile it. it would then hit the exile zone, and the game would check for triggerd abilities again. (e.g morbid triggers from a token hitting the grave. in reponse to the morbid triggering, you use Scavenging Ooze to exile it. both abilities happen)

The fact that it's a state-based action is extremely relevant. It means no one has priority to make responses before the token gets erased. Refer to the previous responses and quoted rules.

timothy130130 to clarify, yes, a token going to the graveyard would, for example, trigger Blood Artist s ability. The ability would go on the stack, then as per CR 704.3, SBA's would happen before any player got priority to respond to the trigger. SBA's are constantly checked and cannot be responded to.
