Can I exile a card for two reasons?
Asked by OGProper 12 years ago
For example, Slitherhead has a scavenge cost of 0. Deathrite Shaman has "pay one swamp, tap, exile a creature card and gain 2 life". If I do this and exile Slitherhead would that count as scavenge also?

No. You need to activate Scavenge as a sorcery, and since part of the cost is exiling the creature, it'll be long gone before you even get a chance to do anything else at all.
You can't use the cost of one card for the other. If scavenge read "Whenever this card is exiled, dada dada dada" then your thoughts here would be correct. However, it's not a triggered ability, it's an activated one. Someone smarter will word this better

Also, and this is just technical stuff, Deathrite Shaman 's last ability, which is the only one of the three that is able to target a creature card, costs green mana, not black. It's inaccurate to say it costs a swamp or a forest because it doesn't. The basic land types are not synonymous with the mana they produce.

Just something worth pointing out, Deathrite Shaman never exiles a card as part of the activation cost, but as part of the resolution. In this way, an opponent can make the spell fizzle by having no legal targets, for instance, using Cremate to exile the card first.

No.
Scavenge is an activated ability, and it can only be activated during your main phase while the stack is empty. Deathrite Shaman 's last ability is also an activated ability, but it can be activated at any time you have priority.
When you activate scavenge, you exile the source card from your graveyard as part of the payment of the activation cost. The source card will no longer be in the graveyard when you regain priority to activate Deathrite Shaman 'a ability.
If you activate Deathrite Shaman 's ability first, not only will you be unable to scavenge because the source card is no longer in the graveyard, you will also be unable to scavenge because scavenge is sorcery speed.
