Can I cast the same buyback spell multiple times on stack?

Asked by Zethos 11 years ago

Can I use Reiterate on a spell multiple times on stack or does the stack have to resolve before I can cast it again? I heard of an infinite mana combo with Mana Geyser and Reiterate, but if Reiterate has to resolve first, then the combo doesn't work. Also, wouldn't there need to already be infinite mana to cast Reiterate infinite times?

You have to let the spell with buyback resolve so that it's back in your hand, and then you'll be allowed to play it again.

In the combo between Mana Geyser and Reiterate : You cast Geyser and then respond by casting Reiterate on it (with buyback). When Reiterate resolves, it makes a copy of Geyser and goes back to your hand. The copy of Geyser resolves and gives you mana, and the original Geyser is still on the stack. You can use the mana you got to help you cast Reiterate again on the original Geyser. You repeat this process until you have the amount of mana you want.

Reiterate , Mana Geyser

The stack does not resolve, it is a place spells and abilities go after being cast/used. Spells and abilities on the stack do resolve however.

Here's how I believe the combo works, although this is the first time I've seen it, so I am not 100% sure.

  1. Cast Mana Geyser (assume that opponent has at least 7 tapped lands).

  2. Before Mana Geyser Resolves, cast Reiterate targeting Mana Geyser and pay its man cost.

  3. Reiterate resolves, creating a copy of Mana Geyser on the Stack and returning to your hand.

  4. The copy of Mana Geyser resolves, giving you seven mana.

  5. Repeat steps 2-4 until you have an arbitrarily large amount of mana.

Note that this combo requires 11 mana open this way, so its not highly practical.
