Can I cast a Miracle card on turn 1 if I play first?

Asked by Cookieboy1221 12 years ago

If I draw, for example, Thunderous Wrath on the 7 card draw at the start of the game and its the first card I draw, can i cast it for its Miracle cost?

No,

702.92a Miracle is a static ability linked to a triggered ability (see rule 603.10). "Miracle [cost]" means "You may reveal this card from your hand as you draw it if it's the first card you've drawn this turn. When you reveal this card this way, you may cast it by paying [cost] rather than its mana cost."

103.3. Once the starting player has been determined, each player sets his or her life total to 20 and draws a hand of seven cards.

103.7. The starting player takes his or her first turn.

To summarize, you draw your initial hand, then you start your turn. A miracle card can only be played for its miracle card if it was the first card you drew in that turn. Because you draw your starting hand before your turn actually starts, you cannot play it for its miracle cost.

Your opening hand is drawn before the game actually begins, and doesn't happen during a turn, so Miracle can't trigger.

Miracle triggers when the card is drawn, and you make the choice about whether or not to cast it as that triggered ability resolves. If you don't have any sources of mana to pay the miracle cost at that time, you can't cast it.

Plus how would anyone know if it was actually the first card you drew of your opening hand? :)

You have to reveal it upon drawing it. So i assumed it would work. But as it is before the game starts i now know it doesnt work.

If you did draw your hand at the start of your turn instead of before it, you would need to have used something like Karn Liberated to restart the game so that you have mana. Then draw your hand one card at a time. Then you would have to keep your hand just after looking at the first card if you were to use the miracle.

So even if it were possible, it would put you in a really bad position.
