Can Hell's Caretaker bring back the creature I sacrificed to use it's ability?

Let's say Hell's Caretaker is on the board and I just dropped Gray Merchant of Asphodel to hit for 7. Next upkeep, can I sacrifice the merchant and target him in the graveyard to bring him back using the caretaker's ability?

No. Costs for a spell or ability are paid as the final part of casting, after the targets are chosen. Therefore, when you choose the spell's targets Gary isn't actually in the yard as you haven't sacrificed him yet.
