can doomblade target black creatures?

I was playing a game with a friend. I enchanted a black creature of him with Ice Cage . Than he casted Doom Blade on the frozen creature.

I think it was an illegal play, cause the card says target non-black, meaning it can't target black creatures.

My friend said it can target black creatures, but simply has no effect on them (exept destroying Ice Cage in this situation). He saw it as a bolt of dark energie destroying the ice, and than doing nothing to the creature.

incorrect on your friends part. the creature being black makes it an illegal target, sot he ice cage stays and the doom blade stays in his hand.

If the text on Doom Blade was worded more like Pyroblast - "destroy target creature if it's nonblack", or something similar - then your friend would be right, but that's not what the card says. Because Doom Blade specifically says "target nonblack creature", a black creature can't be chosen as a target for it.

The target has to be both nonblack and a creature.
