Can Counterflux counter a creature spell cast with Cavern of Souls?
Asked by gruvyslushytruk 11 years ago
I've encountered the situation numerous times where I've had a Counterflux in hand as someone cast a creature off of Cavern of Souls . They both "can't be countered" so what happens here?

The creature would be uncounterable, and thus be unaffected by Counterflux . It could still be targeted by Counterflux , but it would not have any effect.
The Counterflux isn't being countered by the use of Cavern of Souls , at least not in the literal game sense. "Counter" in this sense means:
"701.5a To counter a spell or ability means to cancel it, removing it from the stack. It doesn't resolve and none of its effects occur. A countered spell is put into its owners graveyard.

Nothing is trying to counter Counterflux .
The creature spell is a legal target for Counterflux , even if it's uncounterable, so it doesn't matter whether Counterflux was overloaded (in case that mattered). If the spell is uncounterable, any effect that would counter it simply doesn't do anything. The rest of the effect resolves as normal. Counterflux will attempt to counter the creature spell, but fail to do so.
Additionally, Counterflux can't be countered by spells or abilities. State-based actions can still counter Counterflux in the event that it has an illegal target. However, spells can't be cast without enough legal targets, so Counterflux has to be legally cast, then lose its target pre-resolution before SBAs will counter it.
