Can 'Brave the Elements' be used against a Creature with Unblockable?

Asked by xseiber 10 years ago

Situation:

I have a 'Blighted Agent' on the field, my opponent has 'Knight of Meadowgrain'.

I swing my 'Blighted Agent', unblockable, my opponent uses 'Brave the Elements' on his knight and chooses Blue. Says that his knight can now block my agent, due to unblockable being an ability that is blue-specific, ergo it is legit for his knight to block my Agent.

Granted that this is during a very casual match, and I am in no one a die-hard MtG player that knows all the rulings intimately.

So, to sum it up, is it perfectly legit/legal to use 'Brave the Elements' to make my opponent's creature able to block my unblockable creature?

Unblockable does not Damage, enchant, block nor target. As such protection has no interaction with it. If your creature is unblockable, creatures cannot be declared as blockers for it, regardless of protection.

702.16b. A permanent or player with protection can't be targeted by spells with the stated quality and can't be targeted by abilities from a source with the stated quality.

702.16c. A permanent or player with protection can't be enchanted by Auras that have the stated quality. Such Auras attached to the permanent or player with protection will be put into their owners' graveyards as a state-based action. (See rule 704, "State-Based Actions.")

702.16d. A permanent with protection can't be equipped by Equipment that have the stated quality or fortified by Fortifications that have the stated quality. Such Equipment or Fortifications become unattached from that permanent as a state-based action, but remain on the battlefield. (See rule 704, "State-Based Actions.")

702.16e. Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent or player with protection is prevented.

702.16f. Attacking creatures with protection can't be blocked by creatures that have the stated quality.

Something I forgot. Unblockable was changed to a statement "can't be blocked". It isn't even an ability anymore, it is a fact. So blighted agent can't be blocked, there isn't even an ability to interact with.

Link all cards in your question. There's a formatting guide at the bottom of the page.
Blighted Agent
Knight of Meadowgrain
Brave the Elements

Your opponent is incorrect. Protection doesn't just nullify everything about an object of the given quality. Protection means four things: "This can't be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, or enchanted by anything (quality)." Blighted Agent's ability doesn't do any of those things, so protection from blue won't stop it.

Thank you! Also, I forgot to linked my cards in hindsight and couldn't edit my submitted question, sorry.

I think I worded my second post poorly. I may need to repost.
