Can an indestructible creature be "dealt with" by a combination of combat damage and -1/-1 counters?

Asked by Justinicus 11 years ago

My friend is using the following method to remove indestructible creatures from play:(for example sake I will use Avacyn, Angel of Hope , Fusion Elemental & Tragic Slip )

  1. He attacks with his Fusion Elemental and I block with Avacyn, Angel of Hope .
  2. Damage is dealt to Avacyn, Angel of Hope and "before damage is removed" he plays Tragic Slip for its -1/-1 effect.

He tells me that this will kill Avacyn, Angel of Hope as her toughness has been expended with the combat damage and while that may not kill her the -1/-1 from Tragic Slip does.

As I am fairly new to the game, I need some professional advise her. Is he correct here or is he creating loop holes where there aren't any?

He's wrong.

Damage doesn't lower toughness.

After damage is dealt by Fusion Elemental, Avacyn is an 8/8 Indestructible with 8 damage marked on it, which will not destroy it because it is indestructible.

After Tragic Slip, Avacyn is a 7/7 Indestructible with 8 damage marked on it, which will not destroy it because it is indestructible.

Now...if they blocked another creature with the Fusion Elemental, which died, allowing morbid to come online, Tragic Slip would give Avacyn -13/-13 which WOULD cause her to be moved to the graveyard as a state-based action.

That is 100% BS. However, when his Fusion Elemental dies, he can play Tragic Slip and Avacyn, Angel of Hope will get -13/-13 and she will die. Or he can play it as a combat trick and both live because an 8/8 versus a 7/7 Indestructible creature does nothing. So, either both die or neither dies.

Thanks guys!

I figured that was the answer, I just wasn't able to properly articulate it.
