Can a sorcery be cast in response to an instant?

Asked by thewiredmind 13 years ago

Example: During my precombat main phase I pass priority to my opponent and he casts Tragic SlipMTG Card: Tragic Slip on a 1/1 creature I control. In response to his instant can I cast a sorcery like Increasing SavageryMTG Card: Increasing Savagery and save that creature? I know I can cast a sorcery only during my main phase but was wondering if I can use it as a response or if that is only an instant feature?

If this is true, can other/all spells be used as a response? Could I cast Divine FavorMTG Card: Divine Favor to save him as well?

The restriction on casting a sorcery is that it must be your turn, during your main phase, and THE STACK MUST BE EMPTY. So no, you can't.

bcurran is right

here's the ruling :

307.1. A player who has priority may cast a sorcery card from his or her hand during a main phase of his or her turn when the stack is empty. Casting a sorcery as a spell uses the stack. (See rule 601, Casting Spells.)

I am guessing this same stipulation (the stack must be empty) is also true for enchantments and create spells?

thewiredmind exactly, the same thing apply, unless it says otherwise on the cards (Abilities on creatures like "Flash")

302.1. A player who has priority may cast a creature card from his or her hand during a main phase of his or her turn when the stack is empty. Casting a creature as a spell uses the stack. (See rule 601, Casting Spells.)

303.1. A player who has priority may cast an enchantment card from his or her hand during a main phase of his or her turn when the stack is empty. Casting an enchantment as a spell uses the stack. (See rule 601, Casting Spells.)
