Can a creature without flying be *assigned* to block a flyer...?

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but this isn't about actually being able to block the flyer and prevent damage, but rather if the game allows you to assign it as a blocker on any level (then fail at blocking). This is for a card concept, for an equipment that gives its bearer all the abilities of the creature it blocks, and evasion like flying is the conceptual hangup... can a non-flyer be assigned to block a flyer, then gain flying with this equipment and block it? My assumption is that you can't assign it as a blocker, but I could see it going either way. Other evasion like menace makes me assume that no blocking assignment is allowed with either menace or flying, but I may be missing something. Thanks in advance!
Appreciate it! And very interesting about Flash Foliage and Nature Shields Its Own! I wouldn't have expected the 0/1's to be able to block flyers!

No, in order to be assigned as a blocker the creature needs to have flying or reach. However, a creature without flying/reach can block a creature with flying through means other than normal blocking assignment, such as Flash Foliage or Nature Shields Its Own.
5/1/2006 The Saproling token is blocking the attacking creature, even if the block couldn’t legally be declared (for example, if the attacking creature has flying, or is Vindictive Mob).
