Brave the Elements vs Fated Retribution

I joined a tournament last Sunday and my opponent cast a Fated Retribution . In response, I played Brave the Elements for white. He said it won't matter because it's not targeted. huh?

btw, I didn't call the judge because it was a casual game. Our respective designated opponents for that round didn't show up so I just played against him to kill time.

Your friend was correct. Protection gives you protection from 4 things

Damage
Enchant/Equip
Blocking
Targeting

A good mnemonic device for that is DEBT

Fated Retribution does neither of those things, so protection does nothing to stop it.

Protection does 4 things: you can't be targeted by that color, sources of that color can't deal damage, aura's can't enchant it (any aura's already on it fall off), and can't be blocked bycreatures of that color. Board wipe effects do none of these so they still work.
