Blocking cards dropped with Kaalia of the Vast

Asked by Kadash 10 years ago

I play Kaalia of the Vast, give her haste, I announce combat, swing with kaalia, then ask for blockers, so the dropped creature hits directly. Does it happen like that? Or when I declare attacking I have to drop the creature ? What I am asking is, can they block creatures dropped with Kaalia,of the Vast?

No. Magic is not a game of speed or sleight of hands. It follows a rigid structure of back-and-forth checks and turns.

Kaalia of the Vast's ability triggers during the declare attackers step. It has to go onto the stack and resolve during this step. Only when players pass priority in succession over an empty stack does the game advance to the next step or phase. Your opponent will be able to declare a blocker for whatever creature you put onto the battlefield tapped and attacking.

The steps of the Combat phase happen in a specific order:

  • Beginning of Combat
  • Declare Attackers
  • Declare Blockers
  • Combat Damage (there are two of these if first strike or double strike are involved)
  • End of Combat

Kaalia of the Vast's ability triggers in the Declare Attackers step, when you declare her as an attacking creature. The ability will also resolve in that step. This happens before blockers are declared.

Thanks a bunch, I was reading some primers and the way they had it worded it made me think that way.

Technically, since Kaalia's ability is a 'may' ability, if you declare her as an attacker, and then ask for blockers, it's too late to use her ability, and you won't be able to put a creature out with her that turn at all.
