Blinking Faerie Artisans

Asked by RazortoothMtg 7 years ago

So somewhere I read that if you blink Faerie Artisans (maybe via Deadeye Navigator) sometime in response to the trigger, you keep both tokens. Is this true? If so, how does it work so I can explain it to my friends?

It is a bit tricky perhaps and the reason it is wrong is not super obvious. It's not totally wrong.

First, blinking Faerie Artisans when its trigger is on the stack won't get you a second instance of their triggered ability. The ability only triggers when they are on the battlefield. There is no way to stack the blink effect such that both the "old" and "new" instances of Faerie Artisans were on the battlefield at the same time such that you get two triggers. So, that part of the description is clearly wrong.

Second, when a permanent refers to itself by name, it means "this permanent". This means each Faerie Artisans you control has its own token artifact, essentially; the last sentence of the trigger can be understood to mean "Then exile all other tokens created with this Faerie Artisans". So having more of them gets you more tokens. This leads to what might have been mistaken for your trick working: if you blink Faerie Artisans when its trigger is on the stack, the trigger will lose track of the "old" Artisans, so you will keep the token generated by the trigger you responded to indefinitely (ie it will never be exiled by another trigger since its Artisans left the battlefield). The "new" Artisan keeps track of its token separately, so it can be triggered without exiling the existing token.

Also note that if you already have a token created by Artisan, flickering the Faerie will make it "forget" about ever having made that token. So if its ability triggers again, you will create a token without exiting the previous one.

This can be repeated as many times as desired to keep accumulating tokens.

So i just have to blink the Faerie when the creature is on the stack so it forgets the old token? Thanks for the help.

Correct. When the Faerie re-enters the battlefield, it is a brand new object with no memory of past history. Meaning it believes it has never created a token before, and therefore will not exile the token created by the "old" Faerie.
