Black Cat vs Bident of Thassa

Asked by Mazzuno 9 years ago

I swing two 3/2 Blue Elemental's at my opponent.
He then blocks with a Black Cat to one of my 3/2 Tokens.
Now I also have a Bident of Thassa on my field.
What order does the Black Cat ability and my Bident of Thassa ability go onto the stack?
I have no cards in hand so I wouldn't discard then draw, but if I draw first I'd have to discard that draw.
We're just confused lol.

Triggers that happen at the same time go on the stack in APNAP (Active Player, Non-Active Player) order. Since it's your turn, you're the active player, and your Bident trigger would go on the stack first, followed by your opponent's Black Cat trigger. Then, the last thing to go on the stack (the Cat trigger) resolves, and you discard no cards (because your hand is empty), Finally, the Bident trigger resolves, and you draw a card.

Tl;dr: You end up with a card in your hand.

Combat damage is dealt simultaneously, and Bident of Thassa 's ability triggers. Before the ability is put onto the stack, the game checks for any necessary state-based actions, and Black Cat is destroyed for having lethal damage marked on it. This causes Black Cat 's ability to trigger.

Whenever multiple triggered abilities from different players would be put onto the stack simultaneously, they are put onto the stack in APNAP order (turn order). Because you are the attacking player, your ability (Bident of Thassa 's ability) is put onto the stack first. Then, your opponent's ability (Black Cat 's ability) is put onto the stack.

End result: You discard nothing, then draw a card.

The active player's triggers go onto the stack first and resolve last.

Since it's your turn, you are the active player.

The order of events go like

  • Bident trigger goes onto the stack
  • Black cat trigger goes onto the stack
  • black cat trigger resolves(you discard
  • bident trigger resolves.
