Banishing Light vs Commanders
Asked by Smokemansam 10 years ago
I know when a commander gets exiled, it returns to the command zone. But I was wondering if Banishing Light will hold the commander on the field under exile?

i believe you can choose to keep it exiled from banishing light or you may choose to return it to the command zone

Rules questions should be asked in the Q&A, which is linked in the header. I can't convert this thread to a Q&A question, so I'm moving it to BE.
There's no such thing as "on the field under exile." The battlefield and exile are two completely different zones.

When a commander gets exiled or goes to the graveyard, its owner has the choice to send it to the command zone instead. That applies to Banishing Light .
But if the commander's owner has, let's say, Naturalize in hand, s/he may simply choose to let their commander get exiled, and later destroy the Banishing Light and get their commander back on the field in that manner instead of having to pay an increased cost for it.

Banishing light doesn't keep the creature on the field, it just exiles it. People just like to put the exiled creature under banishing light as a reminder.
