Bad River and Blood Crypt
Asked by ProgenitorX 10 years ago
If I play a Bad River and the following turn use it to search for a Swamp (Blood Crypt ), when Blood Crypt is put into play, does it automatically come in untapped or does it's triggered ability occur and I have to either pay 2 life or have it come untapped? Basically, does putting it into play still trigger the "When it enters the battlefield" effect?
Thanks in advance!

Note that nothing is triggered here. Blood Crypt 's last ability is a static ability that defines a replacement effect.

Oh oops. Yes that's right. Having that be an actual trigger would cause all kinds of silliness.

Blood Crypt 's ability is checked when it enters the battlefield. For the purpose of its trigger, it does not care how it got there, whether from a fetchland like Bad River or you playing it from your hand normally. For it to be otherwise, the ability would need to be worded in such a way that there was some other requirement, such as "As Blood Crypt enters the battlefield from your hand..."
