Auriok Champion

If I had Auriok Champion on the battle field can black or red creatures target or deal damage to Auriok Champion. And if not can something that is multicolored like Prized Amalgam deal damage since it has blue in its mana.

When working with protection, I find it helpful to remember the acronym DEBT.

A creature with protection from something can't be:

Damaged by objects with that quality
Enchanted/Equipped with objects with that quality
Blocked by creatures with that quality
Targeted by spells or abilities with that quality

So Auriok Champion has protection from black and red, so it can't be damaged by, enchanted or equipped with, blocked by, or targeted by things that're black and/or red.

Protection only looks to see if an object has the quality and doesn't care about anything else. So Auriok Champion will look at Prized Amalgam and run the check, "Is it black or red?" The answer is yes, so the Champion can't be damaged by the Amalgam.

Protection does not allow specific things to happen to the protected creature:

  • Damaging

  • Enchanting/Equipping

  • Blocking

  • Targeting

As for color...in normal Magic, a card's color is determined by mana symbols in the card's casting cost or by specific color indicators (usually found on non-land cards that don't have a casting cost, Bane of Hanweir  Flip for instance). In the instance of Prized Amalgam, it is both a blue and black creature.

In your given scenarios, Auriok Champion would be protected in both cases because the creatures are both attempting to deal damage and are colors that are protected against.
