Aura Flicker

Asked by JvJ 12 years ago

I was curious about how oblivion affected auras, so I looked it up and found this on the gatherer:

"If the exiled card is an Aura, that card's owner chooses what it will enchant as it comes back onto the battlefield. An Aura put onto the battlefield this way doesn't target anything, but the Aura's enchant ability restricts what it can be attached to. If the Aura can't legally be attached to anything, it remains exiled forever."

I have 2 questions about this.1. Could you use Flicker to switch what an aura is attached to?2. I'm wondering about the line "An Aura put onto the battlefield this way doesn't target anything." Does this imply that one could "Aura Flicker" an aura they controlled onto a shrouded/hexproof permanent?

I assume you're talking about the card Flicker .

1) Yes. Flicker blinks a target nonland permanent. If the permanent is an Aura, it will reenter the battlefield unattached and then become attached to a legally enchantable object of your choice.

2) Yes. Auras only target as spells. They don't target at any other time. If you put an Aura onto the battlefield without casting it, then you choose what legally enchantable object that Aura will enchant. The Aura will then become attached to that object without targeting it.

Corrections: Oblivion Ring , not Oblivion.

*Correction: Flicker blinks a nontoken permanent, not a nonland one.

Do you think this trick could ever be used as a viable strategy somehow?

No. It's too convoluted. It's a cute trick to play in combat or when the board position allows for it, but as a strategy, you'll get blown out while you're fussing around with all the auras and blink effects.

This is actually a pretty common tactic in commander where pretty much every deck has lightning greaves, swiftstride boots or some other way of getting hexproof or shroud. I play a Brago deck and this little loophole has won me many games. Commander is an exception to many popular conventions though.
