Archangel of Thune's trigger and summoning sickness
Asked by Mr_crazydude 11 years ago
My friends and I are in dispute of the following:
I play Archangel of Thune and use 2 additional mana (Tithe Drinker and Basilica Screecher ) to extort on the same turn.
Do all my creatures receive a +2/+2 counter (two times +1/+1) on that turn, before the battlefase?
I can't see why not because Archangel of Thune ability is a trigger ability and does not require to be tapped....So I don't see how "the summoning sickness rule" effects it in any way.
Also if your creatures would receive counters they would receive 2 +1/+1 counters and not a +2/+2 counters. This matters since some effects affect +1/+1 counters specifically. Most effect placing p/t counters will always place an amount of +1/+1 or -1/-1 counters (there are some older cards that place some funky counters).

summoning sickness affects 2 things
- abilities that involve the tap symbol ("tapping" being a cost does not count. it has to be the tap symbol")
- attacking.
All other abilities are unaffected by summoning sickness. Even activated abilities. Even Heritage Druid 's ability is unaffected by summoning sickness.

And Draugo is right about the Archangel of Thune not even being there when extort resolves.
you still don't get the counters.

I realize that the way you worded it is a little weird. If you are extorting a different spell then yes you get the counters, but if you are extorting the archangel spell the others are correct. you wouldnt get the counters because archangel is not yet on the field to have its ability happen.

so order is:
1) I cast Archangel of Thune onto the battlefield.
2) I use 1 mana to extort with Tithe Drinker (trigger?)
3) I again use 1 mana to extort but this time with Basilica Screecher (another trigger?)

When you cast a spell it goes to the stack, and everyone gets a chance to make responses before it resolves (a permanent spell like Archangel of Thune will go to the battlefield when it resolves). They key thing here is that the Archangel is still a spell on the stack when your Extort abilities trigger. Those triggers will end up resolving while the Archangel spell is still on the stack, meaning she's not on the battlefield to give your guys +1/+1 counters at the time you gain life from Extort.

Reader the first answer it does however leave me with another question. What if you changed the order? :)
1) cast some X mana spell (doesn't matter what as long as it trigger the extort option)
2) extort with Tithe Drinker
3) extort with Basilica Screecher
4) cast Archangel of Thune

Casting Archangel after you've already gained life doesn't do anything. She only triggers when you gain life while she's on the battlefield. Anything else that happened before she actually entered the battlefield doesn't matter.
I get the feeling I'm not understanding your question.

No, you are getting the question. I'm just trying to change the possible outcome in my favor. But, alas for me, the answers stays the same. No counters can be gained from Archangel of Thune the same turn it is cast. Simple as that.
Thank you all for clearing it up.

Well, it's not impossible to gain life. If you're able to gain life later in the turn after she's officially on the battlefield then she'll trigger just fine. You get counters if you change your proposition to:
1) Cast Archangel of Thune (Extort or don't, whatever) and let her resolve
2) Cast something else, use Extort

K, thx. That's exactly what I was looking for! :D

Summoning sickness has nothing to do with it. Extort triggers on cast, so when you cast the Archangel of Thune the stack will be:
Extort
Extort
Archangel of Thune
Extorts will resolve first and so the Archangel will not be in play when you gain the life.
