Another Blessing of Nature question

Asked by _poke_me 13 years ago

My opponent casts blessing-of-nature targeting, lets say, 3 creatures. If in response I kill one of those creatures (via Bone SplintersMTG Card: Bone Splinters for example), does the spell still resolves, or is it countered because it has lost a target?

A spell only fizzles (is countered by state-based actions) if all of its targets are illegal. Since Blessings of NatureMTG Card: Blessings of Nature still has two of its three targets, it can still resolve. Your opponent will distribute the four counters among the remaining targets.

Just as an FYI, you wouldn't be able to bone splinters in response, as it's a sorcery.

@Epochalyptik: Because the distributing effect has targets, that distribution is announced and locked in while the spell is being cast. If one of the targets for Blessings of NatureMTG Card: Blessings of Nature gets killed before it resolves, the counters that were going to be distributed to it don't go anywhere.

601.2d If the spell requires the player to divide or distribute an effect (such as damage or counters) among one or more targets, the player announces the division. Each of these targets must receive at least one of whatever is being divided.

I see; I thought it was more along the lines of a may ability where you don't actually choose until resolution. Good to know.
