Akroma's Memorial with an overloaded Mizzium Mortars
Asked by GoTeamJosh 12 years ago
This is something that recently came up in an EDH game. My friend had card:Akroma's Memorial out to give his creatures all that goodness plus protection from red/black. I had a Mizzium Mortars in my hand which had the potential to deal non-targeted damage to each creature that I do not control. I did not cast it because I was under the impression that his prot red would negate everything, but I did just want to get some clarification on that since it is not targetted damage and I recently read the following statement on a page which led to more confusion - Keep in mind that this only applies for targeted spells/effects, which means it has to say "target" on it. If it doesn't target anything but just affects it, protection does nothing. Wrath of God is a common example of something that could get through "Protection from white", for example.

A good way to remember "Protection from X" is that it nullifies D.E.B.T
D = Damage. Any Damage from a source that is X will be prevented.
E = Enchants / Equip. Auras and equipment that are of X quality can't attach to it.
B = Blocking. Creatures with quality X can't block the creature in combat.
T = Targeting. Spells and effects with quality X can't legal target it.
In your case, the card:Akroma's Memorial would have granted protection from red to his creatures. This would prevented any damage Mizzium Mortars would have done to his creatures.
Maybe keep Skullcrack around to get around it.

Thank you both for the answers. My original assumption was correct but I did just want some additional clarification. Also, Skullcrack would be excellent.

While it's true Wrath of God isn't stopped by protection from white, you need to remember that Wrath of God doesn't try to do anything that protection would stop anyway. It's a misleading comparison.
Protection from X means this object can't be
1) Damaged by anything of quality X
2) Enchanted by anything of quality X
3) Equipped by anything of quality X
4) Blocked by anything of quality X
5) Targeted by anything of quality X
While an overloaded Mizzium Mortars doesn't target anymore, it does still deal damage. Protection prevents that damage. This means you can cast Mizzium Mortars against a pro-red field, but it won't do anything to those creatures.
