Adaptive Automaton Creature type
Asked by huginnson 13 years ago
While I wasn't involved in the scenario, there was an arguement during the game next to me that Adaptive Automaton 's creature type had to be a type already in play.
Player A cast an adaptive-automation, to which Player B responded by Lightning Bolt ing the 3/3 golem token on Player A's board before the automaton resolved, then states that Player A can't declare "golem" as a creature type because there were no golems in play when the Adaptive Automaton resolved.
The arguement ended in Player A's [[adaptive automaton not being a golem, but I was curious if Player B was correct in the statement. If someone could post some ruling to help solidify the answer, it would be greatly appreciated.
Player A would of been correct in which his Adaptive Automaton would still have been a golem.
The Automaton's ability to choose a creature type is set that you can only name a creature type that has been printed in the game of Magic, not that the creature type has to be on the battlefield for you to choose it.
204.3d If an effect instructs a player to choose a subtype, that player must choose one, and only one, existing subtype, and the subtype he or she chooses must be for the appropriate card type. For example, the player can't choose a land type if an instruction requires choosing a creature type.Example: When choosing a creature type, "Merfolk" or "Wizard" is acceptable, but "Merfolk Wizard" is not. Words like "artifact," "opponent," "Swamp," or "truck" can't be chosen because they aren't creature types.

A card which has a restriction like that will ALWAYS state it. Since Adaptive Automaton does not state that the creature type you choose must be the same as the creature type of a creature on the battlefield, there is no such restriction. Player B was wholly incorrect.
Adaptive Automaton would have been a Golem in addition to its other types.

this is one situation were you have to be carful,
some of the printed creature types are not the offishal types
if the type has been changed in oracle the the printed type is ether wronge or incompleat
a lot of the older cards with the type such as wizard, soldier, knight, and so on have aditional creature types, and im to lazy to find a creature were the printed type is compleatly wronge

cronox man u need to work on your spelling cuz i can even reead that and ya he was wrong its any type in mtg history but as aftermentioned not artifact or legend etc. and as cronox mentioned old cards the ones the say summon legend although that would appear to be a creature type unforunatley it isnt and those creatures also dont specify there type those in no way could recieve an automons buff and ya player b is an idiot so hes saying i have no creatures on the field so i have to choose one of yours thus you get the buff uh i dont think so as i think this is what player b was trying to do basically cheat his way a +1 +1 buff as automons abilty isnt may you have to do it and if he was correct it happens as cast so you couldnt even use construct as a type.

Well, player B is wrong. The Automaton's ability doesn't require you to chose a creature type among the creatures on the battlefield, it just requires you to chose an existing creature type, if there was a creature with oracle texting stating that it had microwave type you could have a Microwave Automaton, and pump up all your microwaves...
