about turn priorities and casting instants

Asked by tristen21 7 years ago

on my opponents turn he casted a creature, i know that he has Bone Splinters on his hand. can i cast an instant that destroys that creature to prevent him on using his sorcery card?or i can't cast anything since it is still his turn and has the "priority".

It depends.

Scenario 1:

Your opponent casts the creature spell and it resolves. The stack is now empty. Your opponent regains priority as he/she is the active player. You won't get a chance to destroy the creature before he casts Bone Splinters, (unless anything else goes on the stack before it ie a triggered ability from a Soul Warden), which by the time he does, the creature will have been sacrificed to the cost.

Scenario 2:

Your opponent casts the creature spell and it resolves. There is at least 1 more object on the stack waiting to resolve. Your opponent gains priority again because it's his turn. Then, in order to proceed and resolve the next object, he must pass priority to you. You then have the opportunity to cast your instant spell to destroy his creature before he can cast Bone Splinters.

i see, so i can cast my instant spell if there's a triggered ability/effect when he casted that creature spell,or anything that has been triggered and was put on stack bcoz priority will be passed to me. this is now clear, i just thought instant spell can be casted anytime.thank you so much

That assumes he wants to cast Bone Splinters as his next action. If he attempts to move to the next step/phase without having cast it, perhaps not realizing you intend to foil it, you will also get an opportunity for similar reasons as above (because each player gets a chance at priority before advancing the turn).
