Zombie Infestation for example
If it's an aura that can enchant a permanent, it has to be physically touching that permanent. A regular enchantment like the one you mentioned can go be placed anywhere on the battlefield that you like. It's also the same as with Aura Curses, as you can't physically put the card on your opponent.

When i'm playing I set up my board like this:
Creatures/Living weapons/anything that's attacking or defending
Enchantments/equipment/planeswalkers
Lands
I have slight ocd so everything has to be able to be seen, and i hate it when people put the equipment OVER the creature to state that it's attached. Cuz then i can't see the original p/t etc.

I put non-equipment Artifacts and non-Aura Enchantments on the far left of my playing area, usually on the same level as creatures and my graveyard. If they're mana producing they go on the land level, of course.

I typically rearrange my board a lot, with land closest to me, on the same level my graveyard is. My creatures go ahead of those, with auras and equipment on them, or on the same level. Planeswalkers, non-equipment artifacts, and player or battlefield enchantments usually go next to my lands if my battlefield is well populated by creatures.

Don't mind me, I'm just bored.. :) So I drew a pretty picture (well, maybe not pretty, but a picture either way). When I play, I like to stick to a layout like this. Obviously it gets adapted slightly depending on the deck I'm using; some don't use Equipment, Enchantments, Planeswalkers, etc.
Creatures are always placed on top of Equipment/Enchantments with the names showing at the top, the last one added going to the back of the pile, unless it's something that inhibits the creature like Guard Duty , when it goes on top of the Creature. If someone exiles one of my creatures with Fiend Hunter , I'll place my exiled card beneath their Hunter to keep track of what exiled what.
At the end of the day, I find deciding where the cards go before starting a game helps me focus more on what's actually happening in the game, rather than spending time trying to figure out what I've got on the battlefield all the time.
Emrakool says... #2
Enchantments go onto the battlefield and unless it is an aura (enchant player, land, creature, etc) remain on the battlefield not attached to anything.
