I have this thing were I can't STAND if anyone stands over while I'm playing. Since I play a control deck, Im usually last out of my friends to play, and they come over to watch my game. But sometimes, they stand over me, ask to look at my hand, and do all this little stuff that annoys me. Anyone else have these little things they hate?

But pile shuffling without shuffling afterwards isn't even an issue, because that's not what we're talking about. The problem some people apparently have is pile shuffling to distribute lands, and then shuffling. That is not something I consider cheating.

I refuse to riffle shuffle my deck, but if I pile shuffle, toss it a few times, cut it in half and mash the two halfs together, toss it a few times and then mash it together again is that not random enough for "the rules?"
The pile shuffle splits the clumps from the end of last game up, the five or six step shuffling process after randomizes it. If my game lasts 10 turns and I happened to hit 6 or 7 lands, pile them all up and shuffle, a couple times, the chances of them all being in one half of the deck are still high enough that that makes me uncomfortable. I think being a tight-wad about how other people shuffle when they're not consciously stacking their deck and insinuating that their attempts to randomize their deck is cheating just shines a poor light on the person doing the insinuating.
I think most people know that pile-shuffling then taking the top 7 cards is a faux pas.

@Schuesseled we were of the mindset "you wanna be alone? fine, get used to it." lol but yeah that would have been the answer to give lol

Poor sportsmanship. Especially players who nerdrage when my brew destroys their $200 netdeck. (Although that's kinda satisfying TBH)

@SharuumNyan: No one was calling you a cheater and no one was saying your shuffling method isn't acceptable. We were trying to explain and clarify the meaning of "random", because it's very particular and the word wasn't being used properly in the discussion (which was causing confusion and misunderstandings - like this one).

I have a friend who plays instants and sorceries by removing them from their hand slightly, but are still holding them facing away from me so they can read them out. Then they put it in their graveyard and start enacting the effect.
Taking back of game changing moves is another one. Or just forgetfulness in general. "I forgot it had first strike." "Oh I should have one life for that Island I played last turn from Staff of the Mind Magus ." Things like waiting until Declare Attackers to choose targets for Goblin Battle Jester or if you'll switch Fluxcharger 's P/T. Actually there's quite a lot of timing stuff I let slide in casual...

@Rhadamanthus go back and read again. It was stated that pile shuffling and then shuffling is cheating because it distributes lands. That is what I was responding to.

I read that article, and it really is only relevant if your opponent pile shuffles more than once. Going straight to a pile shuffle after a game with no purposeful mana stacking is going to make for a very different game than the last. IF he only pile shuffles once. I pile shuffle once and break it once or twice and it works just fine.

Okay, I see it now. Yeah, Rayenous was being a little too enthusiastic and ended up getting off-the-mark in his responses.

A deck is not completely randomized after rifle shuffling a few times, it is not completely randomized after pile shuffling (1 or more times), and it not completely randomized after overhand shuffling a few times. You must do a combination of these things multiple times in order to completely randomize your deck. If you are not doing this then there is still a high probability that cards that were put back right next to each other into your deck after a game are still going to be in close proximity of each other. So in other words that combo you pulled off 1st game will still likely be within a few cards of each other in your deck making it easier for you to pull off the combo again. This can be considered cheating even if you don't know how many cards apart they are, knowing that the second part of your combo isn't on the bottom of your library and likely to be drawn relatively soon is inside information that you shouldn't have. You are obligated to completely randomize your deck and any time your opponent suspects your not fulfilling your obligation they can call a judge over to check into it. Lastly I want to add that your deck will actually be more consistent from a game to game basis over the long haul if your completely randomizing your deck, so anytime your rushing to finish shuffling or not doing everything you can to mix your cards up then your actually hurting yourself. Unless your putting the cards in a specific order directly stacking it that is.

SharuumNyan pile shuffling without shuffling afterwards is considered cheating. A knowledgeable opponent will either shuffle the deck after you present them to cut it or ask a judge to shuffle your deck because they do not feel it is sufficiently randomized, especially if you pile shuffle. In short, that is a big yes to your question, pile shuffling is considered stacking the deck because it can be manipulated to stack the deck, with the right math. This is mtg and there are no shortage of math nerds in the game, so it is a reality.
