mtg question, please help!

Ok I have a question about how exactly a situation in mtg gameplay would pan out.

Say I have a creature who has protection from black. It is in play. If my opponent uses a blanket spell such as Life's Finale (which is a black spell) will my creature with protection die? Also will any other copies of that creature be valid targets to be taken out of the deck as a result of Life's Finale's second effect?

I know blanket spells will effect creatures who have hexproof and can't be the target of enemy spells and abilities (because they aren't being specifically "targeted" under a spell with blanketing effects) but protection from a color is different. Someone help me please! This is problematic at times.

Sorry typo, I know creatures with hexproof would die from a blanket spell like life's finale....but protection from a color is different.

Protection only works when the card is a permanent on the battlefield. Abilities of cards in libraries do not function unless specifically stated on the card.

Protection is summarized by DEBT:

Damage - all damage to a creature with protection from X by a source of type X is prevented.

Enchant/Equip - a creature with protection from X cannot be enchanted or equipped by a card of type X.

Blocking - a creature with protection from X cannot be blocked by a creature of type X.

Targeting - a creature with protection from X may not be targeted by a source of type X.

Destroy effects are not prevented by protection, and therefore a creature with protection from black will still be destroyed by card:Life's Finale. However, a 2/2 creature with protection from red would not die to Pyroclasm , because it is a damage-based board wipe rather than a destroy-effect board-wipe, and damage is prevented by protection.

So if destroy effects do kill a creature with protection, does that mean a destroy card like Go for the Throat can kill it? Or is it only blanketing destroy spells that are effective because they don't specifically Target the creature?

In order to work, a card must not do any of the things that protection stops.

While Go for the Throat does not deal damage, it does target, and therefore you may not use it to kill a creature with protection from black because that creature cannot be targeted by Go for the Throat.
