Can I target any spell on the stack?

So my question is pretty simple to ask and many can answer it. My question involves the stack. So let's say I control a 1/1 Human. I use Giant Growth on it but in response my opponent uses Shock. In response to that I use Cancel. Can my opponent, instead of using another Cancel on my Cancel use it on the Giant Growth which is on the bottom of the stack? I understand Cancel specifically states it can "counter target spell" and Giant Growth is still a spell since it remains unresolved as does the rest of the stack but I still am not sure if it is legal to do so. To clarify here is my stack from top to bottom.

Cancel (targeting Giant Growth), Cancel, Shock, Giant Growth

Also I understand that it would be a whole lot easier just to use Cancel on the Cancel but this is just theoretical and I'm assuming there are situations that it would be necessary to target the Giant Growth instead. Please clarify!

Questions like this should be asked in the Q&A.

Cancel can target any spell on the stack. Al spells are part of the same stack because there is only one stack.

There are indeed situations where it would be necessary to target the Giant Growth, for example if you used Counterflux instead of Cancel, then your opponent would have to counter your Giant Growth directly.
