I have [Survival of the Fittest] in play and a [basking rootwalla] in my hand. My opponent [Righteous Fury]s me and attacks for the win. I tap a forest, discard the rootwalla (whice puts it into play for it's zero madness cost] and repeat until all 4 [basking rootwalla]s in my deck are on the battlefield, on my opponents turn, as if they have flash. Is this a legitimate play? My friend was quite put off about it..

For reference, to link cards use double brackets.
Assuming each time you use Survival of the Fittest , you discard the rootwalla and search for another one, for 4 green mana you can get all the rootwallas into play at instant speed.

You can play Madness cards on your opponents turn too. It right what you did.

The reason you can play anything is because either a rule or a special effect gives you permission to do it. The rules of the game are what give you permission to cast creatures at the usual time, but Madness is an effect that gives you permission to cast things at a special time: when you discard them. This was a legal play.
