Basic Lands...

Hey guys!

So Right now StarCityGames is having a sale on various Basic Lands. After going through the list, I got to thinking "Wow, there's a lot of basic land art" (I didn't actually think that, but for the sake of the question, it's there). Everyone uses Basics at some point, whether we like to admit it or not. They're the most iconic and quintessential aspect of Magic, and we're all guilty of having a preference.

So I'd like to know what kind Basic Lands do you use? Are you one of those guys that has to have the full arts? Do you go the 'every art is different' route? Do you have a specific art you prefer? Foils?

Personally, I am a huge fan of Unlimited / Revised lands, Unlimited especially.

So, what is your policy on Basic Lands?

*I apologize if this thread has existed before, but I have not seen it in recent memory.

Well I'm a sucker for foils :p. I usually try to make the lands match the flavor of the deck and get all the same art though and then foil them.

I love the unglued ones and I need 20 or so of each snow-covered ones ....

I like having 20 of each basic land (with same art, preferably from the same set) for limited play (draft/sealed) so I don't have to go hunting for any at the lgs.

Foils.

And in case were talking EDH, I also try to have different art for each basic in the deck, so it's even more unique.

TexasDice the draw back of unique art is if you accidentally show a land to your opponent(s) somehow (misplay, drop your cards, etc...), you play a different one than the one you showed, they know you're still holding land. The same art (and ideally set symbol) hides that information better.

In my storm build, I have one foil of 17 different Mountain arts, because I don't really care if they see my hand.

That really only applies for decks that win past turn 8.

It's EDH. Nobody is counting cards or taking notes in Commander.

TexasDice too many people do not take edh as casually as you might think.

Well, screw those people then.

I like to go the combination of different arts and/or foils, while trying to maintain a particular theme and/or flavor..

So yes, I overthink my choice of basic lands too.. ;P

My preference is Unlimited (unless I can get my hands on Beta). If I don't have those available, then I go with either full arts, then foils.

I generally use Zendikar full-art lands, but if I'm playing a deck with a lot of fetching, I tend to use white-border lands. Just seems to speed up the fetching process for me.

Ya know...now i need to acquire all the same art for my modern deck now that i know different art could give my opponenta clue as to what's in my hand...

I love me some Zendikar full-arts. The art on them is just too beautiful to play anything else. For me, white-bordered lands and lands with older-style borders and arts are just not vibrant enough. I am a man of bright colors. :)

Also, here are my personal choices for each of the Zendikar basics:

Everything John Avon! Especially the Mountains!

I use pre-modern frame foil basics.

My favorite Basic is Forest #349 from Onslaught.

I tend to use Zendikar lands, just a preference. I didn't think to us White bordered lands for fetching, I might just have to pull out my Unlimited lands (I have about 20 of each basic from Unlimited, not 20 of each art, just 20) I try and use Un-Set lands in commander.

In my sixties, I just use whatever lands I have on hand. I am a fan of unique art for each basic in my EDH decks, however. Actually, I have the exact Mountain in the OP in my Naya Token Blitz!, except I blacked out the border (because I hate white borders) and erased the text in the box, replacing it with a freehand-drawn red mana symbol like more modern basics. (Turned out pretty good, I'm not artistic at all lol)

I really am a sucker for full-arts of all forms, though I hate to admit it. I like my decks being filled with the same basics, preferably full art zendikar...though un lands are nice too. But expensive. Ugh.

That being said, I might just make my next modern deck I buy with unlimited basics...
