Altered art cards

Hey there, I was looking through my cards and looked at my Primordial Hydra and one of them the art is different. I thought maybe it was a promo, but it doesnt appear that the M13 series ever had a Primordial Hydra promo, so it must have been altered. What my question is, does this change it's value? And if so, how do I find its new value?

An alter's price is based on the original card's price, the quality of the alter, and the content of the artwork.

Can you post an image of it?

Maybe post a picture? I'm interested in seeing just how altered it is. Did you trade for it?

Primordial Hydra was the Duels of the Planeswalkers Promo card for M13. You can look at the pictures here to see if they match the cards you have. Let us know.

Yes, thats exactly the one it is! Where is the value of that one? Or is it just the same as the one from M13?

Also, that promo isn't listed on TCGplayer at all either, or any of the other sites I usually use, I guess I will have to start checking SSG

Looks like the price is about $6, which is actually less than the M13 version.

Usually promotional cards that are easy to obtain such as Walk-in promos, Duel Deck alternate art foils, etc., are valued at less because it's harder to obtain that card from a pack. When those cards are released, the value of the pack rare also goes down to an extent, because now people have access to a cheaper version and the pack rare becomes almost collectible.

Interesting, and very true. The normal Primordial Hydra is at $7.99 tcg prices, and $5.99 for the alternate art Xbox DotP edition.

But Treasury Thrull is valued at $0.26, and the pre-release promo is at $5.19, that's a huge difference.

Same for the foil Skarrg Goliath , it's at $1.20 for a foil, and the prerelease foil is worth $3.73

So that's interesting to note that ones that are release or pre-release are worth a bit more, but those that are in card pack promos are differently valued.

That being said, I wonder what the value of their alternate art foil Plains that's going to be release will be. $0.30 instead of $0.10??

The pre-release rares are different because you had 3 days to get yours, and if your local game shop sold guild packs that they had left over, that's the only other way to get them.

I still have all 5 of my guild promos from Gatecrash because of their increase in price.

There's a lot of factors that go into the pricing of promos. I have 3 FNM promo Pillar of Flame's, for a few reasons:

  • They are FNM promos, so there's only a month to get them, plus the receiver is either randomly selected, or Top 8's
  • I use them in all my red decks
  • The art is SICK.

The promo is also going up in price, as is Searing Spear's promo.

It's good to pay attention to these things when making a decision on when to buy promos.

Good deal, and I assume the longer you own the card, the more the value would increase??

April 26, 2013 4:19 p.m.

Yes and no. As long as the card is being played in decks that win games, its price will continue to rise. As soon as the card stops seeing play, though, its rarity won't matter anymore and its price will dip back down.

Well, that's true and it's at the same time false. If cards are just plain good, then they stabalize at a certain price tag. Take Primordial Hydra, for example. It doesn't see competitive play often, and when it does, it's a 1-of. It's just a good card, and the only format it really sees play is EDH, but that doesn't stop it from being $8.
