Ah, in that case, Aikido is definitely something I'm interested in! I did some archetype research and the closest thing I can find to what Thantis would be considered is "Pillow Fort," but I may look into building an Aikido deck after I've got Thantis where I like her.

I love unconventional, weird, and jank decks (I'm not really interested in cEDH because I find most decks in any competitive format become either repetitive to pilot or all start to look the same as other decks after a while). Mention me anytime and I'll take a look!

I too like discussing theory a lot.

Aikido is basically any strategy where you attempt to use your opponents against each other. I mentioned it because that seemed like what you were doing with Thantis; forcing people to attack and preventing them from attacking you thanks to your walls, making them want to attack each other, which would eventually leave you with fewer and weaker opponents (more likely to win).

Well, I'm currently working on a deck that you might be able to help with. It is VERY out there. I'll try to post it and give the link sometime. Maybe you will be inspired by it or at least find something interesting.

Hey, you commented on my Thantis deck recently (thanks again for the feedback!) and mentioned you had some interesting deck ideas. I'm not familiar with "Aikido" style decks, but I'm happy to discuss anything you want, if you feel like it. Deck-building and theory-crafting are two of my absolute favorite things to do in Magic, almost more-so than actually playing the game sometimes, haha! Mention me (@dawgydance) if you feel like talking!

I think it's also worth investigating my concept with not only lots of powerful counterspells, but powerful artifact/enchantment removal (especially the kind that hits more than one) so your lack of artifacts/enchantments is mitigated.

I thought it was a great idea at the time because Fblthp, the Lost decks win almost purely because of Proteus Staff and they're considered cEDH, and Illuna - searches Proteus Staff! I thought it was a great way to boost consistency and get more colors, but apparently the 4 extra mana for the mutate isn't really worth it. (I'm still testing my version though, and at the very least, I enjoy it.)

Also, if I were to make a Food Chain deck, I wouldn't pick Illuna (probably Maelstrom Wanderer. Illuna is only the crazy/weird/interesting beast... elemental dinosaur I like when she's using her ability to its ... "fullest".

Hmm. I would if I could afford the Food Chain. ($80?) I guess I'll try to optimize my version for funsies. However, I love making - crazy creations, so maybe someday I'll be able to make something cEDH that fits my budget.

Well, the deck I made is my current (terrible) paper list. It's on my profile. I was more wondering about others' opinions/ideas.

Actually, Food Chain is not something I would have previously thought of for Illuna. Do you think what you suggested could be competitive? If not, is there some other variant you can think of that could be?

However, you may be right. I'll just have to test it out and see how it goes.

Actually, no. Both of your commanders would need to be artifacts to have partners, and Silas Renn is the only artifact partner commander. Also, there's only one Legendary Enchantment Creature with both Black and Green, Pharika, God of Affliction. I think Golos, Tireless Pilgrim could be good, however, that's only one commander and a companion. Umori won't work for 3 commanders if you want something other than creatures.

Really? I don't quite agree. I understand your point that no access to mana rocks or enchantments is incredibly bad. However, I do think that with aggressive mulligans, a high density of counterspells and green (and red) mana sorceries, you should consistently be able to assemble the combo turn 4-5, be able to win turn 5-6, and be able to throw some counterspells on others. Still not optimal, however, I think it at least deserves some recognition.

Yes, however, if your commander is an artifact creature or enchantment creature you can do artifacts or enchantments instead

July 8, 2020 6:49 p.m.

I never thought I would see a deck whose commander takes up 2/3 of the budget. Wow.

July 8, 2020 6:15 p.m.

So, I did make an Illuna, Apex of Wishes deck (but I'm not going to post it here.) Regardless, do you think that Illuna could be cEDH viable? I think that at its best, it could be probably high-fringe-competitive. Now, before you tell me that the card is terrible, let me tell you how I think the deck would be competitive. Basically, my idea was to run no creatures, and only a single nonland permanent, specifically, Proteus Staff. (There are other possibilities, but I at least think that Proteus Staff would be most optimal). The idea is that you could use token generating sorceries, mutate on with Illuna, use Proteus Staff on it, reorder your deck exactly the way you want, (using the cards you haven't exiled), and assemble a game winning combo. (You would use cards like Kodama's Reach to get there faster, and counterspells to protect yourself).

Honestly, do you think it could be viable?

I was irl building a Vial Smasher/Tymna/Obosh deck with a flying/extra combat subtheme

Hey, I made a new deck (should be on my profile page). It's a creation I made, that's also quite jank. The Tazri deck will go on the back burner for now. If you would be interested, I would appreciate you taking a look.

Thanks. This deck was one of my first somewhat truly competitive decks. It's quite fun to play.

July 8, 2020 4:42 p.m.

Personally, I think it's not a bad idea to have more than one wincon, in case someone disrupts you (which in cEDH, WILL happen, MULTIPLE times.) Sure, you have counterspells, but what's the point of having counterspells to defend your wincon if you can easily have 3-4 wincons to use just as easily already?

This is craziness on so many levels.

July 7, 2020 12:19 p.m.

I think you really need to find room for Vial Smasher the Fierce somewhere in the deck. If you look at the art he's literally a suicide bomber.

Said on Why are they ......

Crap, I forgot Mr. Freeze, the Scarecrow, Deathstroke AND the Riddler. Most of you can probably guess however what I would say about them.

Quite a bit of variety among colors, so no, they're not all Boros, but there are still some tropes.

July 7, 2020 9:38 a.m.

Said on Why are they ......

I'm bored so I'm going to go through all of the Batman characters I can think of. I watched the whole Gotham series back to back, so that's a lot. I'll say this - I will interpret the colors as such to make it easier- White - Morality Blue - Logic Black - Evil Red - Impulse Green - Innocence

The Joker - Gruul. He doesn't do what he does because he's evil, it's just his nature, and he's very, very impulsive.

The Penguin - Naya. Judging moreso, again, from his appearance in Gotham, he was kind of a klutz. He didn't really hate people, he just wanted to better the status of himself and his family because they were poor. He was very childlike - similar to the Joker - but also had strong elements of human goodness in certain moments. He always acted on what he felt was just.

Poison Ivy - Grixis. Ironic, no Green, I know. This is because she knew full well that she was killing people - and enjoyed it. She was also quite cold and calculated, but could also lose her temper at times.

Catwoman - Bant. She was quite intelligent and reasonable, and wanted what was best for people. However, she wasn't very well versed in social constructs, being an orphan didn't help, and struggled to compromise and "act normal", instead relying on what she felt was right.

Batman - Naya. Almost Boros, but he was just too, well, inexperienced. Having his parents murdered in front of him was such a pivotal moment in his life that he was never able to progress or change after that point, and remained childlike in many ways (thinking he was a lot stronger and smarter than he was).

Alfred (Batman's Butler) - Azorius. Ok, Alfred trained Bruce Wayne (Batman) to be who he was, plus I loved his rendition personally, so here he is. Very logical and practical, not impulsive, and very just. Generally someone you want to have around.

Ra's Al Ghul - Dimir. He wanted to watch the world burn, and he knew how to do it.

Bane - Mardu. He was all impulse, but was never certain as to whether what he was doing was actually good or bad - he just did it. He was told by the society to kill others, and he knew that it may be for a good reason, but he also knew it may not.

Thanks for reading.
