Philoctetes Deckling

Longtime player (~20 years), short time user of TappedOut. I only play EDH and Limited Formats, but I follow all formats.

EDH is by far my favorite format, in a casual way. My playgroup does not like infinite combos, we play with a house rule of no more than 5 cycles of a demonstrated loop per turn. This changes up my deck-building priorities and in my opinion opens up a lot of interesting interactions that wouldn't be worth it in a world of 5 turn games.

I have 12 total EDH decks, which I am slowly uploading. I want to do a good job with each, explaining card choices in detail and putting some thought into the aesthetics of the page.

Gotcha, no problem. Thanks!

Have you seen the new tech from Dominaria?

Jaya's Immolating Inferno will be going in my Neheb!

And I also fit Neheb into a Boros Spellslinger deck with the new Firesong and Sunspeaker! Good stuff!

Hi Suns_Champion!

Sorry for the late reply, I've been doing major renovations on my home so I've been a little MIA.

Hope the Discord server is going well, I'll probably stick to discussion on the forum for now but I imagine you will find some nice tune ups :)

Hello! I was wondering if you had Discord and wanted to join a Neheb server I just made! Just a place to more easily talk about Neheb and EDH :)

Link if interested.

I'm going around asking Neheb players on Tapped/Out so hopefully we'll get a good group together.

Hey IAmTheWraith - thanks for the comment! your build looks awesome and quite similar - I went and posted on it!

This is probably my favorite commander of all time, what are you thinking of replacing him with once Dominaria comes out?

I agree - our decks are in the same spirit! My requirement in my meta to win outside of combo presents a unique deckbuilding challenge with Kami, but we share a lot of similarity none-the-less.

I see you are avoiding non-basics to help you create a more one-sided Back to Basics, in my experience even running ~40% non-basics still makes it something approaching one sided. Between having at least 50% basics and mana rocks it is often easy to play around. Removing that restriction opens up some super powerful utility lands!

Just my two cents, keep on group hugging!

Perpetual Timepiece is an interesting one, although just shuffling the cards in doesnt quite do what I want. A similar card that could be a consideration is Codex Shredder, although the recursion is quite pricy. But being able to stock our graveyard every turn is super nice, and it plays amazingly with Sensei's Divining Top. Ill have to think on it!

Ad Nauseam if I can get rid of some expensive wipes is a fantastic idea. Im still on the fence about the sideboard idea but I will almost certainly make this change if I move forward with that idea in mind!

Thanks for the comments! I appreciate the chance to discuss the deck, which I put a lot of time into!

Made the cut and updated the primer! Tough cut but I cut Temple of the False God for The Archer. I hate cutting lands but it's not exactly a land, more of a ramp spell I feel.

Your meta sounds insane and fun! It is good to know what drives decisions, and that is certainly a different environment than my own.

Outpost Siege is one of my favorite red cards, so perhaps I am a bit biased, but I find it is just phenomenal. With your level of "Exile Draw" I get the hesitation, but I just find that as an enchantment the resiliency is so important for an effect like this one. It will consistently get you value. With the level of redundancy in your list, too, even if you exile a "game-breaker" you have so many more that can still be drawn!

I'm less sold on Vance's Blasting Cannons  Flip - not being able to play lands is a major downside. I am thinking of cutting it at some point, perhaps for that Sword of Fire and Ice I have yet to pick up :)

Side note - Sensei's Divining Top could help quite a lot in sculpting the flips. I may have to try to acquire another copy to shoehorn in here....

Great comments guys thanks for the interest and following my journey!

luther - while I do love Hatred as a fantastic win condition in a lot of decks, I feel in this build the Attack with Licia commander damage plan is very Plan B. I like having the option, but the main reason I like it is that it sort of exists by itself without slots dedicated to it, you know? But thank you for the suggestion!

MagicBlues - thanks for following along! The deck has definitely evolved over time, haha. My goal is actually at this point to continue to upgrade as I make certain acquisitions and really trick it out. My latest thought is potentially including a Burning Wish Mastermind's Acquisition sideboard package and offloading some board wipes and other situational cards to it.

Good comment regarding Not Forgotten my reasoning specifically for Not Forgotten over a card like Shreds of Sanity or Recoup is that it can bring back whatever I need, and especially Helm of Awakening which is just such a crucial piece. It can also circumstantially grab a Glacial Chasm or something similar!

Keep the comments coming guys I am enjoying the discussion!

Love the comments guys, thanks!

scatteredsun that's good feedback, 5 player games definitely change how cards play. I typically play 3 or 4 player pods where there is a bit more of a "rock, paper, scissors" element to the interaction with opponents. My meta also plays a lot of interaction.

Suns_Champion I love the feedback thanks! A lot to unpack in your comment:

1) I will be building an "acquire list" segment in my primer to catalog cards that I intend to trade for or purchase. This will include planned or theorized cuts. Should make for some discussion, cuts are always nigh impossible for me!

2) Firebrand Archer is going to find a home.

3) Feedback on Strionic Resonator is appreciated. With more uses it might find a home here.

4) "Win-more" is an interesting and I suppose controversial topic, I agree. I mean to some degree EDH is All about "win-more" and it is one of the beautiful things about the format.

I think what I really mean when I say that term goes back to a concept in my primer of "Quadrant Theory". I view "win-more" cards as cards that are only good while we are in a commanding position. I only feel like I have 1 or 2 slots to dedicate in my entire deck to cards like that.

Likewise, with my card draw I want it to be good in the early game to help setup the mid/late game, and I want it to be good while things are not going smoothly to help me draw out of the situation. A card like Outpost Siege hits that sweet spot - comes down relatively early, helps me create velocity and develop a new board if something goes wrong. A card that to me embodies the opposite of that is Knollspine Dragon - only good when a lot of things go right. Loreseeker's Stone occupies an interesting space - it is pretty pricey at 9+ mana for the first 3 cards, but it is at it's best when things are going poorly and we are out of gas. I need to think about it, because for whatever reason I have found my current card draw suite to be sufficient, but my style of play is very patient so that could be driving my experiences as well.

Good stuff guys!
