Stupid question- can you activate an effect in response to taking lethal damage?

Like- can I (in response to dying) use an instant or activate an ability?

You can activate an ability or cast a spell in response to a lethal spell such as Lightning Bolt. For lethal combat damage, your last opportunity to add anything to the stack would be the declare blockers step.

Damage doesn't go on the stack anymore, so once you've taken the lethal damage (from any source) it's too late to do anything - when priority is checked you'll lose before you have a chance to do anything.

That said, if the damage hasn't happened yet, but you expect it to come, you're welcome to cast as much as you want (as long as timing restrictions allow)
