Standard Zada burn or self-destruction?

Asked by snowmaster55555atgmaildotcom 7 years ago

I have a Zada, Hedron Grinder out and, for sake of ease, two other vanilla 2/2 creatures out. If I cast Chandra's Pyrohelix targeting only Zada, Hedron Grinder to let it survive the damage and copy the spell twice, targeting the other two 2/2's, am I able to divide the damage to burn the opponent and let the 2/2's survive, or do they die?

They die. The last sentence in Zada's ability says "each copy targets a different one of those creatures." You cannot change one or any of the targets for your copies.

In addition, here is a ruling from Gatherer:

8/25/2015 If you cast an instant or sorcery spell that has multiple targets, but its targeting only Zada with all of them, Zada's ability will trigger. The copies will similarly each be targeting only one of your other creatures. You can't change any of the copy's targets to other creatures.
