Responding to activation of Myth Realized before blocker declaration

Asked by Cryptomancer 8 years ago

Sorry for the long question title; I can't think of a more succinct way to ask this.

Suppose my opponent is attacking me with a creature, and I have a Myth Realized out. I activate it using its second activated ability with the intention of declaring it as a blocker. Can my opponent respond by removing it before I have the chance to declare it as a blocker, thus allowing his attacking creature through?

Thanks.

Yes. Before the game moves onto a new step or phase, all players have to pass priority without doing anything. When you activate the ability and it resolves, you then pass priority to your opponent.

If they don't do anything, the game moves to the Declare Blockers step. However, since they have priority they have the opportunity to cast spells or activate abilities and are able to respond to your Myth Realized.

Ok, so let me make sure I understand this process.

  1. Opponent declares combat, enters declare attackers step, attacks with a single creature. Priority passes to me.
  2. I activate Myth Realized. Priority passes back to opponent.
  3. Opponent responds to Myth Realized activation with instant-speed removal. Priority passes back to me.
  4. I pass priority.
  5. Declare blockers step begins.

Is that correct?

Almost. After the spell goes on the stack and you pass priority, it resolves and you need to go through another round of priority. I forgot to say that steps and phases only change after priority is passed over an empty stack.
