Question About Card Revision

Asked by Troy242621 8 years ago

My copy of The Rack states that I choose an opponent, but I'm aware that in Revised, its effect reads:

"If an opponent has fewer than three cards in hand during his or her upkeep, the Rack does 1 damage to opponent for each card fewer than three."

Does my copy of The Rack still require me to designate an opponent, or will it use the revised effect?

Cards always operate according to their Oracle text (which is available on Gatherer), not according to their printed text.

The Rack's Oracle text currently reads:

As The Rack enters the battlefield, choose an opponent.

At the beginning of the chosen player's upkeep, The Rack deals X damage to that player, where X is 3 minus the number of cards in his or her hand.

So even the revised edition card has to designate an opponent?

Yes. That's what the Oracle text says, so that's what the card does.

I just checked my revised copy, and it clearly states 'If opponent has fewer than three cards...' not 'if AN opponent', so it would only be a valid effect for a single opponent, not all your opponents.

Back then Multiplayer wasn't really a thing so cards all assumed there would only be 1 opponent.
